How To Get There

The Hotel is located just west of Westgate Mall, on the south side of Carling Avenue between Merivale Rd and Kirkwood Ave. That mall has a number of stores as well as a Food Court; it is open till 9 pm on Friday and 6 pm on Saturday.

Public Transit:

OC Transpo Routes 85 and 101 will stop at or near the Hotel, while routes 151 and 176 will stop at Westgate Mall across the street. Routes 14 and 86 pass nearby, but will require a transfer at Carling and Holland/Fisher or a long walk down the hill from there.

Taking the O-Train to Carling Station also can help you connect with Route 85 or 101 for a quick trip to the Hotel site.

*** NOTE: OCTranspo's "Network Optimization" changes will take effect less than a week before the conference (i.e. on Labour Day); you should check this PDF file to determine if the changes will affect you.

Driving:

If you are coming from the east, it is effectively impossible to make the necessary left turn near the Hotel. Your best bet is to stay on Carling until you reach its intersection with Kirkwood. At that point, turn left twice (the second left turn should be a Wide Left) to put you on the correct side of the road and approaching the Hotel from the west (your right side at that point).

The same holds for drivers on the Queensway approaching from the east; you should exit at Carling. The first intersection you will encounter after leaving the freeway will be the Carling-Kirkwood one. [During rush hour, it will be almost impossible for motorists coming off the Queensway to turn left onto Kirkwood. Instead, you will have to continue west to Churchill or even Clyde/Cole to find a suitable place to turn around and return.]

Motorists on the Queensway approaching from the west can simply exit at Carling and stay on same till they reach the Hotel on their right side.

Most travelers from Gatineau or West Quebec will be crossing through bridges that put motorists on a path through downtown Ottawa. If you take the Champlain Bridge instead, be aware that continuing on Island Park Dr all the way to Carling will not help. Instead, turn right at Richmond Rd, then left again at Kirkwood Ave; that will allow you to turn left at eastbound Carling, as above.

If you are traveling from the south or southwest (for example, Barrhaven), it will be easier to take Merivale Rd rather than Fisher Ave from Baseline Rd. That choice will allow you to turn left at Kirkwood Ave and approach Carling from the south; only a right turn at eastbound Carling is then required to reach the Hotel from the west, as above.

From the west, simply stay on Carling eastbound if possible.

Air:

If you are coming by air, the Ottawa International Airport is located south of the city.

  • Taking public transit from the airport, take route 97 to “Hurdman” station on the Transitway, then transfer to either route 85 or 101 to bring you the rest of the way to the Hotel. [Unfortunately, the Hotel does not have a shuttle service.]
  • An alternate way would be to get off at “Greenboro” station (which occurs earlier along the other bus's route) and take the O-Train from there to the “Carling” stop; this will allow one to catch a route 85 or 101 bus closer to the Hotel. However, you will have to take stairs or an elevator at both of those stations, which may not be convenient for you if you carry large amounts of luggage or are otherwise handicapped.
  • Of course, the airport has Taxis available to bring you to the Hotel, but they may be expensive and may levy an surcharge for extra luggage. (Note: they are forbidden to charge extra for wheelchairs.)

Train:

If you are arriving on a Via Rail Train, the train station is east of the City Centre. From there, a short bus ride will bring you to “Hurdman” station, from which you can proceed as above. Taxis also are available from the train station, with the cautions mentioned above.
