Aurora Awards Invitation and Details

The Can*Con co-chairs and organizing committee are pleased to invite you to join them for the Aurora Award ceremony, which will take place off-site, at the Christchurch Cathedral’s Great Hall. A reception will be hosted there, with paid bar and appetizers served round. There is no entry fee, and all Can*Con attendees are welcome to join.

We’re also pleased to invite all non-Can*Con attendees to follow along the
ceremonies with us at our livestream on our YouTube channel.

WHEN?
Saturday evening, October 19.
The reception will begin at 6pm, and the awards ceremony at 7:00 (ish). The reception hall will be open for a while after the ceremonies, so please toast nominees and winners and the general awesomeness of Canadian SFF!

WHERE?
The reception will be hosted at the Christchurch Cathedral’s Great Hall (414
Sparks Street). This venue is walkable from the Sheraton Ottawa, and we
recommend strolling down Sparks Street to reach it.

SHUTTLE AVAILABLE
Should the weather be disagreeable and for guests who cannot or would prefer not to walk, we will have an accessible shuttle running back and forth from the Sheraton to the venue all evening long, beginning at 5:45 pm, and until the conclusion of the ceremony. Priority will be giving to individuals requiring accessibility assistance.
No geek will be left behind.

HOW?
We are thankful for the support of Calgary World Fantasy 2008 and the City of Ottawa who helped us make this event free and accessible to all.

IS THIS ACCESSIBLE?
The entrance to the Aurora Awards is on Sparks Street. A lift is there (and will be staffed) in the foyer to bring people to the top of a short flight of steps. The same lift also goes to the basement, where there are additional bathrooms. The bathrooms on the top floor are all-gender individual rooms and have pushbuttons. The bathrooms in the basement have accessible stalls but no pushbuttons  on the main doors. Other than the flight of steps in the foyer, which can be avoided by using the lift, there are no identified
barriers to mobility in the venue.
If you have concerns or specific questions we didn’t cover, please contact our accessibility coordinator, Kate Heartfield, at kateheartfield@gmail.com.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR????

Can I come overdressed?
Yes! Wear your awesomest outfit! Most heeled of shoes (but don’t break
anything)! Bow ties! Swooshy ball gowns!  WE LOVE IT ALL!

Can I not come overdressed?
Yes! Wear your comfy clothes and rock on with your bad self! Wear your well-worn flats and geekiest t-shirts!  WE LOVE IT ALL!

Can I not come dressed?
…that one is a hard no.  But we’re sure other places are perfect with that! Go out and discover the land of the unclothed! Be free and frolic! Just not at the Aurora Awards. <3

PLEASE NOTE THAT, NO MATTER WHAT YOU WEAR, YOU MUST ALSO HAVE YOUR CAN*CON NAME BADGE. Otherwise our door volunteers might not let you in, and that would be sad.
Don’t be sad. Be nametagged!

MORE TO COME!
We’ll release some extra details soon. Yes, there’s more!
Thank you for coming to Ottawa, and for trusting us with the Aurora Awards!
