FAQ

Please note this section will grow as we receive more questions, so if you’re wondering something and not finding an answer here, please let us know.

For Attendees

  • Day passes or full weekend passes are available for pre-purchase, and will be available on-site (slightly more expensive): https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/cancon-2024-virtual-live-double-feature

  • This year, we’re offering meal plans with hotel room stays at the Brookstreet Hotel!

    https://www.can-con.org/hotel-and-meal-plans

  • You can buy a meal plan to eat on the con floor, enjoy one of three restaurants on-site, or grab a snack in the consuite!

  • Authors love signing books, so yes! You can bring your copy or buy one in the vendors’ room (either the author’s table if they have one. Otherwise, Bakka Phoenix will sell many attending authors’ titles.)  Check our schedule when it’s available. Some authors will have signing sessions in the dealers’ room, which is a perfect time to get your book signed. Otherwise, you can ask after a panel if they have the time (please be respectful if they’re heading somewhere and can’t do so currently).

  • Our vendors’ room is the destination for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror literature, with a strong emphasis on Canadian authors! AND, best of all, it’s open to the public. Some come on down and enjoy books, crafts, art, and wares!

For Pros

    • You must send in your panelist application form to participate on panelsby MAY 31. Note that we receive a lot of interest for limited programming spaces, so while we do our best to accommodate everyone, we always receive more applications than we have room for.

    • During the summer (specific deadline?), our programming team will send everyone who completed the form our tentative list of panels. You will then fill out another form (called “Expressions of Interest”) to let us know which panels you’re interested in. Currently this is due JULY 15.

    • After we have received responses, the programming team will assemble a draft schedule based on interest and availability. If we’re able to find a spot for you as a panelist, we’ll send you an email with this draft schedule attached. This can be subject to change before the con if there are scheduling issues or if people end up not being able to come, but at this point you should generally know what panels you’re on.

    • Please note that filling in the panelist application or expression of interest forms does not guarantee you a spot on programming.

  • Yes. We hope to eventually be able to comp these for panelists, but as of right now, all panelists must buy their own passes.

  • Yes! We love suggestions (please send in by May 31)! Our programming team works hard to find topic and level balance, so not all suggestions will make it on. We also love panelist suggestions, but we don’t guarantee those picks will make the final panel team—there are lots of moving parts when creating a con schedule.

  • You can apply for a special event spot by May 31! We get many requests so there are no guarantees we can accommodate it, but we’ll do our best to fit them all in.

  • Last year, we launched new reading events, where several authors read five minutes from a current work. We included catering, and a host, and we found these events a hit. This year, we’ll refine our events, but individual reading slots are currently not planned. Our programming team will reach out to you if we think you would be a good fit for one of our reading events!

    1. Some authors like to buy a vendor’s table so they have a homebase during the con.

    2. Otherwise, Bakka Phoenix will once again be on-site, and they’ll bring copies of books, and any books they don’t have on hand, you can bring them copies and they’ll sell them for a minor commission.

    3. You can share your interest in doing a signing when you sign up to be a panelist, so readers will know when/where to find you (signings will take place during the breaks between panels, when the vendor’s room is way busier!).  To participate in a signing, you must state your interest in the panelist application form. The signing table will be beside the Bakka Phoenix booth, so they’ll take care of stock if they have it on hand. Otherwise authors must bring their own.

    4. You can sell them in corridors and after panels. We just ask that you make sure not to crowd any area and to give volunteers time to reset panel rooms.
