Master Classes

Master Classes are held on the Friday of Can*Con and cost $20 to participate.

The Plot Toolkit

Presented by Kim Abrahamse of Firefly Creative
Time: 9:30-11:30am

One of the most complicated things about writing fiction is figuring out our plot. Not only do we have a whole world and characters and conflicts and emotions to bring in, but also -- there's no formula, no single way to “do plot”. Depending on the type of writer you are, you may start with very little plot, and figure it out loosely and organically as you write. Or, you may prefer to fully map out your plot before you write a word. Both of these approaches have great advantages, and you may find yourself using both at different points in time in your drafting and revising. Then there’s the question of plot structure - what is it and how might I use it. There are popular and less popular western models – the three-act structure, the Hero's Journey and the Heroine's Journey. There are non-western structures like Kishotenketsu. Then there are less structured models like the Seven Point Story Structure. In this master class, we'll talk this all out, and try some different tools that you might use to explore and uncover the plot of your story. You'll leave with new ideas and hopefully also a new sense of trust that you can trust what's coming naturally, and not pressure yourself into an approach or technique for plot that doesn't work for you.

Write A Story In A Weekend

Presented by David Schultz and Brandon Butler
Time: 11:45-1:45pm

As per last year, a workshop dedicated to participants producing a story over the duration of Can*Con! Begins with a 1-2 hour slot at the beginning of the convention, ends with wrap-up session at the end. In this workshop you will learn tips and techniques to quickly turn your ideas into effective stories. Optional prompts will provide an opportunity to develop key skills and immediately deploy content from other Can*Con workshops, deepening the knowledge you've gained. A second session of this two-part workshop on Sunday afternoon will provide optional feedback and critique to participants, and prizes will be awarded for various categories. Subject to the interest of participants, those who complete a story over the weekend will have the option of including their story in a specialized Can*Con anthology created for the event, to be published in paperback and ebook formats. The intention will be to reach 30,000 words as a minimum for an anthology.

Zine Workshop for Writers

Presented by Derek Newman-Stille
Time: 2:00-4:00pm

Zines have been an important part of the Speculative Fiction community since their origins in early SF fandom. Zines become a space where we can share our passions and fandoms with each other. This workshop will allow participants to create a mini zine and create zines as a group. Derek Newman-Stille is an established zinester with over 10 zines currently produced.
